Book Reviews Mayo Internal Medicine Board Review 1994-95, edited by Udaya B. S. Prakash, 898 pp, with illus, $89.95, 200 First Street SW, Rochester, MN 55905, Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research (telephone: 800-479-4530), 1994, ISBN 09627865-1-9 Type of Book: A multiauthored, condensed text that focuses on information needed to pass the certifying and recertifying examinations administered by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Scope of Book: The chapters are reasonably concise yet wide ranging; each includes bullets to emphasize important facts and questions for review. Contents: All subspecialty organ systems are covered. Cardiology and gastroenterology are addressed in multiple chapters. Common and important diagnostic tests are presented as separate chapters, as are the important 'horizontal disciplines' (clinical pharmacology, medical ethics, geriatrics, and preventive medicine). The review questions are answered at the end of each chapter; a few sentences provide explanations for each question. Strengths: The comprehensiveness and depth of coverage are on target for board certification candidates. The bulleted items provide a quick way to review the important points of each chapter. Deficiencies: The content is oriented more to inpatient medicine than to outpatient care and thus lags behind somewhat in matching the new areas of emphasis on the board examination. The review questions are structured for retention of facts, but the format of questions currently used most frequently by the board is for solving clinical problems. Recommended Audience: Candidates who will take the certifying and recertifying examinations of the American Board of Internal Medicine. Overall Grading : * * * * Jack Ende. M.D., Division of General Internal Medicine, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Alzheimer Disease, edited by Robert D. Terry, Robert Katzman, and Katherine L. Bick, 472 pp, with illus, $139, New York, Raven Press (telephone: 212-930-9500), 1994, ISBN 0-7817-0081-7 Type of Book: A multiauthored text that covers the spectrum of Alzheimer's disease, from clinical manifestation to basic biochemistry. Scope of Book: This book is a classic anthology of Alzheimer's disease. Contents: The text is divided into seven parts, including a wellorganized clinical section and an excellent treatment of the biochemical pathology of Alzheimer's disease. The epidemiology of Alzheimer's disease and the cholinergic hypothesis are well covered. The chapters on ß-amyloid and the tau protein are superb. Strengths: The text contains a substantial amount of detailed information to support the pathophysiologic, biochemical, and molecular understanding of Alzheimer's disease. The editors are highly regarded. Most of the authors are the premier researchers in their areas of expertise. Mayo Clin Proc 1994;69:710-712
Deficiencies: This book suffers from extremely poor timing. The recent revelation of the importance of the apolipoprotein E 4 allele as a genetic risk factor for Alzheimer's disease is practically overlooked. Dr. Katzman comments on the topic in the final three pages of the text; however, entire sections could now be written on this valuable discovery. In addition, tetrahydroaminoacridine or tacrine (THA) was only briefly mentioned in the chapter on clinical trials. This anticholinesterase inhibitor has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration and is being used in clinical practice. Recommended Audience: The book will be useful to clinicians and investigators interested in an in-depth understanding of Alzheimer's disease. Overall Grading: * * * Eric G. Tangalos, M.D., Division of Community Internal Medicine, Mayo Clinic Rochester, Rochester, Minnesota
